Episode 8
In this episode we interview Steve and Dan, two new ASL players (and we mean REAL NEW) to see what they think of the greatest game in the world, and get a few newbie’s questions answered. We compare ASL with Hollywood’s vision of WWII. Dave played his 1,000th game! There is some listener mail, and more discussion about counter storage. We hope you enjoy our efforts to bring you the finest in ASL entertainment!

Thanks Cpl. Uhl, I simply give it one line on a sheet of paper, including, Date, opponent, Scenario name and number, winning player and winning side, location of game played (fun to see whose house you were playing at). Also number of turns played. Dave (of Dave and Jeff)

Hi Guys,
Great show as always - thanks for the mention too (this now ,of course, is my favourite show!!!!!).
Inspired by this I have finally played some Starter Kit #1 scenarios (solo). (thanks to yourselves and thanks to Game Squad Forums for lots of friendly advice and help).
These games have been immense fun, even if I have made many mistakes, and keep making them!
Quick question though: Do you know when Beyond Valor will be back available?
Foolishly I bought the ASL Rule Book but did not get Beyond Valor as I could not afford it at that time (It’s around £60 in the UK). I have since bought some other modules that I have picked up at a good price Yanks, Partisan and Armies of Oblivion. But of course without Beyond Valor and its map boards and counters I can’t play any of the scenarios.
Perhaps you could go through the various modules in a future show? And explain how they sort of link together? As in if you buy a module, what do you also need to be able to play all the scenarios contained in it.
Does this make sense?
Anyway - not only are you costing me money on ASL products - you are costing me money on Beer!!! I’ve just looked up the Monty Python Ale (meaning as I live in the UK it would be rude not too!) - so I am just about to order a crate of 12 bottles!!
For anyone interetsed it is brewed by The Black Sheep Brewery, which is based in Masham, North Yorkshire. They have a web site - but from what I can see will only ship to the UK.
Cheers guys for a great show! Keep up the great work.
Best wishes

Hi guys,
Good show, as usual. Thanks for getting it right that I am a girl. Woman, I mean.
A couple of ideas:
How ab out talking about the ASL starter kits. Have either of you two played them? Own them? What do you think of them as the “future” of ASL? I know from my own club )SoCalASL) that all the newer players including me, are starting out on the starter kits. They are a great value and very fun to play. Some are afraid they will become a separate game system. I think they already are, albeit a limited one.
I’m ready to move on to full ASL as the SKs are growing boring. Some people will probably stick to the SKs, and some will drop off, but most who stick with playing wil move on to the full game. There’s only so much you can do with SK, and being told “in full ASL you could do ____. but this is SK so you can’t” gets old.
Second, since ASLOK is coming, what do you two have to say about tournaments and other get-togethers? Any experiences to share?
Keep up the good work and playing!
-Candice

Phil, Don’t know when BV will be available but you should check MMP’s website under the preorder page or ASL link. We hope to interview someone from MMP soon and maybe we can ask. We will also describe how they link together, that should be simple since the info is listed on all the boxes, and I kept my boxes.
Dave (of Dave and Jeff)
Candice, I believe we discussed the starter kits at least as a “What’s in the Box” segment, but can do more. You bring up a good question about it becoming it’s own system. We did enough talk about tournaments in episodes #3 and #5.

Hey,
Wow you read my comment on the show and I sounded like the Forrest Gump of ASLers…I heard you dog…I like pictures…
Seriously, love the show. I am interested in Pics of the storage as I have several boxes of ASL material waiting to be punched and sorted and am still looking for a good way to do it, especially vehicles. Would be interesting to see the labels you are using for the ‘new’ storage.
Just finished getting my butt kicked again by my teacher, but well worth it. Keep up the great work.

Hi Dave,
Good to hear that you may get to interview someone from MMP - I’ll look forward to that.
I’m not too sure how easy it will be to show how the modules are linked just from the boxes. I’ve been looking at YANKS and noticed that there were boards being used that were not included in YANKS nor Beyond Valor. Scenario 19 uses Board 7, Scenario 24 uses Board 12 and Scenario 25 uses Board 7 again.
Out of the 8 Scenarios you can only play 5.
(Unless you own the original Squad Leader games for Boards 7 and 12)
In order to play all 8 Scenarios you need to buy For King And Country which inlcudes those Boards.
Perhaps this is just unique to YANKS? I have Partisan and that’s fine - you can play all 8 Scenarios with Beyond Valor.
As always please keep up the excellent work you’ve been doing to date - the shows are really informative and hugely entertaining - fingers crossed for a new Episode over the next few days??????
Best wishes
Phil

hi guys…great podcast…i have DL’d #8 and 9. And while listening to 8 you guys mention the movie A Band of Brothers and how Lt. Winters and company take the 88s in the trenches. While it’s true they took 88s back in 1944. In the movie, unless I’m wrong, those weren’t 88s, and look like 105s to me. anyway, keep up the great podcasts! I be DLing the rest very soon!

Thanks for the clarification. This is a good time to remind everyone that we are talking off the cuff and often in a random fashion and do not intend everything we say to be accurate (even occasional rules things). Most of it is but not all. It is great to have our listening community help us out! Dave (of JEff and Dave)

If you manage to make it to the UK one day - you can be assured of a very warm welcome in Wales (twined now forever with Kuwait)
