ASL Extra #5
Once again this episode is not for everyone. It is a scenario analysis and after action report. ASL Scenario AP 29 RAFF’S DILEMMA (from Action Pack #4) is the chosen one for this extra episode and Rich Spilky plays a tenacious German defense against Dave’s attacking Americans. Break out boards 11 and 54, set up the pieces with us, and follow along if you wish. Or perhaps you just want to have a listen.

Woo-Hoo! Another play-through episode! Thanks guys - this should hold me over until you get Episode 13 up. (As long as you post it before Friday!)
Oh, I added Armies of Oblivion to my collection during the Black friday sale. It’s all your fault…

Thanks Cam! We are scheduled to record #13 on Dec. 8th. Jeff usually gets it posted by the following Mon. We will record another “Extra” episode in Jan. Good job on Oblivion (although we do not get a kick back from MMP). Lot’s of interesting vehicles in that one.

Hi guys - great stuff as allways.
I only had Board 54 to listen along with, but that did not spoil my enjoyment of an interesting and great “listen”.
Although I’ve not read through the full rules properly yet your in game analysis did point out a mis-conception I had.
Looking at the Scenario cards I thought you could only conceal units if that Scenario had the “?” counters listed on them.
After listening to the show I had a quick read through Chapter 12 and all is now clear to me - well I will have to read that chapter a few times for it to click - but at least I understand the concept.
Can’t wait for your TANKS! episode.
Thanks again
Diolch

Hey guys, don’t forget you can use VASL to get the boards you don’t have! Much easier clean up!

Great advice scrub! I had forgotten that myself as I have been buying all MMP ASL (and many non official items) and have all the boards.
Phil, glad the “extra” episodes can be of help. Remember that we don’t claim to always play all the rules right. We are all just struggling through this great beast together! Thanks for listening. Dave (and Jeff)

Another great episode. Ok, I am the one who in the past wrote that I hate you because I knew you were going to make me spend $$$ and buy back all the ASL that I had sold when I went to live oversees. Well, you have done it. I have played all of my ASLSK scenarios and I am ready to jump back in. I still have a first edition rule book but I would like to pick up a 2nd edition. Also, I am looking for Beyond Valor 3rd edition. But just as I am ready to jump back in I cannot find Beyond Valor anywhere. Does anyone know of where I can find a copy of Beyond Valor 3rd edition for a reasonable price and maybe a used copy of 2nd edition? Thanks in advance for any help. I remember buying these two items when they came out many years ago in college. But now with a family I don’t have the extra cash that I use to have. Thanks again.

Now we really do feel guilty. Sorry that we do not know anyone who has spare copies. We will keep our eyes out and hope you get a response from a listener. Ebay is an option but it gets expensive. The 1st edition rules still work really well. The BV should be your priority. Dave (and Jeff)

I need to tell you guys how much I enjoy these ASL extra episodes! It’s really fun to hear the nitty gritty of a game session and I think you guys do a great job of flowing through these reports. I can listen while at work and it’s almost as much fun as playing the game myself. I listen to lots of gaming podcasts and I think you’ve really done something creative here that is of value because it’s so specific, detailed and humorous. It’s great to listen to your enthusiasm and get a glimpse of how fun it is to play ASL. I’d love to hear a live mike on some of the really big die rolls of a scenario- I can imagine some of your reactions.
Keep it up, you guys have some real talent!

We are flattered and glad to hear that you enjoy the “Extra” episodes. Dave is always playing ASL and willing to post ‘em if you’re interested in ‘em. The live mic would be challenging due to editing and size concerns, but maybe it is possible. Dave (and Jeff)

Hey guys. If Rich is still looking for a starter Civil War game, he can try either the Civil War Brigade series by the Gamers/MMP, or the GBACW series from GMT.

Kevin: Thanks for the Civil War game suggestion. I ended up purchasing Gettysburg - Badges of Courage from Columbia Games. It is certainly straightforward enough and my friend that I’m trying to bring into the hobby had just visited the Gettysburg site last summer so he was interested in this simulation aslthough we’ve yet to play it. I will however, keep your suggestion in mind should he and I decide to go to the next level in Civil War gaming. Of course, I’m hoping to introduce him to ASL sometime!
