Episode 16: Happy Mortars Day
It’s Spring! A time when a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of . . . mortars? Well, that’s where our thoughts have turned. It’s too early (at least here in mid-western North America) to bring out the gardening tools, so instead we celebrate the season by hauling out another handy tool — the mortar. Hey guys, thanks for all the ASL podcasts episodes! Don’t try to please everyone, as that’s impossible to do. Stick to your guys, you are guys are doing great. Don’t loose your originality… love the humor, beer discussion of course all the ASL discussion including cover art segment!!!!!

Another great podcast. Thanks again for all the time and effort you put into this. I had a thought about something I would like to know the next time you get a chance to talk to MMP. Or maybe you know this without having to ask. Since I am buying (and rebuying) ASL stuff, I would like to know what is about to go out of print. I don’t have the resources to purchase everything but I don’t want to miss out on something. For example, Action Pack #3 has 12 Italian scenarios but I don’t own the Italian expansion. Action Pack #3 does have board 24 which I need for other scenarios that I do own. I think I have everything I need to play Action Pack #5 scenarios. So, I want #5 more than #3 but I am worried that if I don’t get #3 I miss out on it. I looked at Wargame Depot website and there is more than $300 worth of ASL stuff that they have instock that I don’t own. So any advice as to what to buy first would be appreciated. (I own all ASLSKs, Beyond Valor and Paratrooper[minus board 24])

Hello my friends, just a quick note to let you know that I enjoyed yet another podcast very much.Glad you have resumed the box art critique, though not really my thing, I still find it interesting. In my opinion though, none of the ASL box art can hold a candle to the old Roger MacGowan SL series box art. Perhaps it comes down to the sentimentality of the boxes, but I still think Roger did a fantastic job! The podcasts are always entertaining and informative. Glad that there seems to be a lot of newer players listening! Wish MMP would do more to make sure they have what they need to play full ASL, but then I am told they are trying. I would like to hear more about the contents of the old ASL Annuals and the MMP Journals,(maybe CH magazine and Le Franc Tireur would fit here also) maybe a whats in the mag sort of discussion. I would also like to hear some critiques or just plain info on more third party offerings. Bounding Fire and Le Franc Tireur have some neat things just coming out that hold interest amoung the long time players. Lastly, how about a segment discussing the way to acquire some of the OOP/OOS ASL mods that won’t be seeing a re-print or re-release any time soon, for the newer players. Hello Bill. Thanks, as always, for your loyal listenership and useful suggestions. I love the idea of featuring some of the older ASL materials. Especially useful for guys like me who are relatively new to the game and have missed out on all those wonderful, historical resources. We featured a Schwerpunkt product in Episode 16’s “What’s In The Box” segment, and Joe and I will be playing one of those scenarios tomorrow, with a review to follow in Episode 17.. There’ll be many reviews in the coming months of both MMP and third-party products (especially for those publishers who send us samples) so there will always be something “In The Box”. Lots of great ideas. We better start recording by-weekly! Jeff (and Dave)

You guys are back in your normal mode! I thought 15 sounded like you guys weren’t in the groove. But holy mortars Batman, you two (sorry, three) were back in sync for this show. I was listening while at work, with headphones on when “mortar fokkers couldn’t fire” came zinging into my ears - that was funny. I was laughing out loud for too long in the office.
It’s so awesome to hear guys who love a game and take it seriously not take it too seriously. I may have said this before, but I don’t even play ASL (and currently no plans to in the near future) and love the banter and discussion of tactics and history of equipment and battles. I play Combat Commander, Conflict of Heroes, and soon the new PanzerBlitz (an MMP release) and those discussions are all relevant.
I know it’s a ton of work to make this happen and appreciate the effort that goes into it.

This may be an option for your Scenario replays, podcasts, and even your podcasts from a tourney.
Wow, Todd, thanks for the nice post. The fact that you listen even though you don’t play ASL is an amazing endorsement because we always try our best to be both informative and entertaining, and nary a show gets posted that I don’t wonder if we’ve missed the mark or come across poorly. It’s nice to know that we’re doing OK so far. And the positive comments from you and so many others encourage us to continue and to improve.
As for Stickam, you may note that there is already a 2 Half-Squads page there. I’ve been experimenting with the technology for a week or so with the idea of maybe casting live from the ASL Open in April. So far, though, the performance and reliability of the Stickham site has been weak at best. We’ll see. Obviously, the possibilities are exciting — though I guess we’ll have to start wearing pants! Great show as usual. I normally listen on my ipod on the way to work, so I get it in 20 minute doses. Nice item on mortars. i like the question and answer format. I learn more that way.
I would love a show on the whole Stop/Motion/Non-Stop thing. It’s all very confusing when it comes to knowing which modifiers to use. As Winny the Pooh might have said, “I am an ASLer with a very small brain”.
Anyway, keep up the good work, keep the box art bit and discourage the organ playing unless its Bach.
