Episode 27: Don’t Pass Me By
It’s great to have guests and do interviews, but sometimes it’s nice to get back to basics. This time it’s just the two of us and The Rule Book, hunkered down and in it deep. The main topic of this episode is Bypass Movement. It must have pained the Starter Kit designers to make the decision to leave out the bypass rules, and the introduction of bypass must be one of the top most compelling and enticing reasons to step up to Full ASL. If you don’t know anything about bypass, you’re going to learn a lot. If you already know bypass, you’re probably going to learn something new. In any case, don’t let this episode pass you by.
Of course, we also read some Listener Mail and find out “What’s In the Box”. Dave does a movie review of “Hart’s War” and Jeff imparts some of his vast knowledge of grenades. It’s Halloween, everyone, and this is one sweet treat.
Dig it.

Great episode as usual. You should have given the kids your lousy rolling dice as “treats” I am on the fence of whether or not to use Bypass movement. I have both Full ASL (1st ed) and Starters #2 & 3. My feelings are that the hex terrain is the dominant feature and moving around it creates more problems than it’s rewards. However the 40m wide wood houses and limitations of the board can constrain realistic tactics.

Great show guys! You might want to consider doing shows that bridge the ASL full rules from the Starter Kits by highlighting rules not used in the Starter Kits. You started with bypass and you can go on to snipers, heroes, 2nd floor buildings, human wave, Berserk etc.
Oh, I also got the non alcoholic 3 Stooges Bottle Opener. The guy asks Curly if he’s thirsty. Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk.

Although I enjoyed the show, #27 seemed less focused after all of the recent “themed” shows. Just a thought in case you ever get a backlog of episodes again.

Clarification: Ideally, I wouldn’t suggest so many “themed” shows in a row. When you returned to the “normal” format, it seemed a bit jarring. However, I think this may be subjective. IMHO, the Round Table Discussion was the best episode to date, and I listened to it quite a few times while waiting for #27.
Seriously, if I were you two (Dave and Jeff), I would consider doing one or two shows a month, but with longer running times. Most shows with interviews or some sort of group dynamic (roundtable, guest, or live chat) are good for at least two hours. I could be very wrong, but it seems like this would be easier on the two of you. (I find it easy to talk for three hours on a worthy topic, but coming up with a topic worthy of three hours might be another story…)
Episode 27 was quite good, and I know you put a lot of effort into it (Halloween and all).

the reason you aren’t attacked by the firelane down the road hexes while in bypass is because you are bypassing the building or woods hex and not bypassing the road hex. Which means if you are broke or pinned you are placed in the building or woods hex being bypassed. as you know, you can’t bypass a road hex. enjoyed the show!!! keep up the great job!!!

Great episodes guys. Thought you were going to drop off the end of the earth now that ’school’ as re-started. Glad to see you didn’t. Remember, only neglect your friends, family, and job for 2HalfSquad podcasts, you have to have some discipline in life!
